"The
reflection of the neon Miller Lite sign in the island-shaped puddle
no longer suggested a leak, a glimpse into an irrational borderland.
Those rows of foreign goods; Tam Tad, Sapporo, Tiger Brand, Hong King
Dairies; represented nothing but themselves. Their ill printed labels
and unfamiliar typography would not connect me to anything other anything
bigger or more real. I would just not understand and my lack of understanding
would not bring about some sort of radical agnosis, a path of unknowing
that might open my backbrain to the beatific light."
