Anyone else here using Twitter? I think I could do with Alex's help... I seem to have become an unoffical ambassador for Morris Dancing:

And they say it's dying out ...

No disrespect intended.

The thing, is, this news has broken because that Morris Ring have said morris is in danger of dying out Ð what is not being said, is that the Morris Ring are the bastions of male only (read misogynistic) morris, where in fact there are plenty of mixed and womens' sides springing up all the time. The Morris Federation, the other organisation, is much more modern and relevant. I'm in a male only side, most of the members are over 50, and we can't get new recruits. However, some of us have been helping a new women's side get off the ground, and they are inundated with new members. Can't help you with the twitter, Dan, since I'm not on it, but any questions, give me a shout.

The ones around Oxford are all-male, too, so far as I'm aware.

Shamefully, I don't know the ins and outs of the tradtion. Are mixed sides an innovation, or the old ways reasserting themselves?

I'm not a dancer, but it's always great to see them. Some weddings have them, too - in summer, you get the bridal party going down the road where I live, led by a morris man with a sooty face and phesant's feathers in his hat, beating a drum. It feels a lot more profound than a lot of what you find in church, too:

Traditionally, morris dancing was an all-male activity. The Morris Federation was set up in opposition to the Morris Ring in 1974 because women wanted to dance morris but the Ring wouldn't let them join.

Not sure why, but I've set up a Twitter hashtag #morrisdance, but not sure whether I've done it right. You *may* start to see things appearing here:
http://hashtags.org/tag/morrisdance

Also, one of my Twitter followers (actually, photobox.co.uk!) has applied to start a Number 10 petition "to open the 2012 games with 2012 morris dancers, david beckham and (queen) victoria on may pole. May-de my day"

(Don't know whether you need to be logged in to view that).
