Is that a foolish sentiment? I just get the feeling that Brown is a real thinking individual. Call me stupid. |

He gets rid of Tony Blair. That is a virtue all by itself. It is no longer necessary to contemplate the enigma of Tony Blair, a man who floated on the surface of things so successfully like froth and only found steadiness in events in which the story could be rendered in Black and White. He had some successes in that abroad. But it proved to be his undoing in Iraq. His main problem I think was this lack of real intellectual substance. In other words his capacity for irrationality. Brown has his illusions but is a figure of much greater substance in these terms. I think he always added gravitas and steadiness to a Blair government that was basically very unsteady and unsure. A side thought here. One of the good things about Falling Man, the DeLillo novel, was the way that he never mentioned politics directly and no names of actual figures entered into it. If he had of done that would have immediately deflated its power, much of which came from its reflection on the unknowability of human circumstance. |

We'll see. Having lived through more "new dawns" in politics than I care to remember, I tend to view these occasions as: the sandwiches are stale, the orange juice is warm, we didn't pack the crisps, and it's pouring with rain - but we're still going to have a wonderful pic-nic, aren't we children? |

>>He gets rid of Tony Blair. I'd like to be optimistic. The main thing I remember about the advent of the Blair era was the phrase, "well, at least it gets rid of the Tories!" John Major anyone? |

It does seem unfortuante that political choices in this country are usually a matter of what you're trying to get away from rather than where you want to go. Maybe that's naive. Not sure I can really imagine seeing a political candidate and saying, "fuck yes! That's what I want!" Actually, I can't imagine doing that with much apart from guitars, beers or women. *sigh* |

>GBW ... That's got the Muslim vote sorted. Now we're just down to the small print on minor issues like Iraq, the EU, education and the pesnions crisis. Cheers! |

Cool dude. Not sure I would vote for him though. I think he needs to put more guitar strings between his stance and that of the previous incumbent's. Like sort of clear blue beer or water or women or something maaann. |

GBW candidate is fine, as long as it gets rid of the GWB incumbent. |

And I say to you: tough on guitars, beer and women, tough on the causes of guitars, beer and women. |

Gordon Brown has obviously given Harriet Harmon a talking to. She now denies saying that she thought the government should apologise for the Iraq war. I can understand why; it wouldn't be politic, in particular in respect of GB getting a hearing from uh GB (W). Hm. |

Hmm, funny how GB now rules the world. Personally, I'm in awe of the outgoing Blair's dedication to method satire: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/62400 60.stm !!! |
