”Thanks,” you say, “I’ll admit to being a bit apprehensive about this. I don’t really know anyone at The Anchor.”


”No-one,” says Bae, “really knows anyone, but enough cheap existentialism. Think of it as your debut in the local scene, right? How are you going to find out about these people unless you see them in their natural environment. It’s what Vic Vic would call participant observation.”


For a moment you can hear this technical term in Vic Vic’s exact voice. “But you said you need me as back-up?”

“Yeah, I need you to keep an eye on Sparrar when my back is turned.”

”You don’t trust him?”

“Let’s say the jury is currently out. Now Jinge and Sparrar might try to get a rise out of you, so you’re going to have to keep your cool. Can you do that?”
