Bae raises an eyebrow as you take the can. She opens hers with a swift move and puts it down next to her plate. You mirror the move, although your action with the ring pull is not quite so assured.

”Ah, you atheists!” roars Aileen. “Never saying grace before your dinner.”

You catch Bae’s eye to check whether she’s joking. Bae is too busy eating to notice.

Aileen smiles. “Only having a laugh, luv. You’re a student, by the look of you? English?”

”Actually, I’m part…”

”No, I mean what are you studying? English Literature?”

”Yes, with Bae,” you take a careful sip of the Carlsberg. “I’m also studying Computer Science.”

”Computers, eh? Just like our Bae’s aunt.”

”Your food, Aileen,” says Bae, “is getting cold.”

”I’m a nosey old witch for sure,” says Aileen.

The three of you finish up your dinner, and Bae waves Aileen away from the washing up. “You’ll be late for work,” she tells her.

The front door slams with a loud farewell. Bae lifts your half-empty can from the dinner table. Raises an eyebrow. “You don’t have to drink it, if you don’t want to.”
